Zain Verjee: “The Delilah of Kenya”

August 4, 2011

Zain’s “Love Lines.” CNN correspondent Zain Verjee revealed her sexy radio roots to CNN Newsroom anchor Kyra Phillips Monday. After a CN story on the launch of MTV thirty years ago with the Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star,” Zain was ready to give her report on Amy Winehouse. Before she did, Kyra queried, “Zain, I want to bring you into this discussion….You say that’s actually the first song you played as a radio D.J.?”

Zain answered, “Yes, it was in Kenya and I was doing the love show, which was called “Love Lines” at the time.” Mellifluously, she added, “Kind of like the Delilah of Kenya almost.”

Then, more to Kyra’s point, Zain remarked, “When we launched this private radio station [in Nairobi], it was a big deal because in Kenya at that time everything had been [under] state control. So, it created all this buzz and that was the first song that was played on the breakfast show on Capital FM radio, “Video Killed the Radio Star.” It also launched my career.”

The Delilah of Kenya“: No Philistine.

[Author’s aside: Elaborating on her radio show in a 2010 interview in Kenya’s Standard, Zain said, “It was called Love Lines and it was just sort of playing romantic music, reading people’s love letters, and dispensing of advice that I was ill positioned to give.”]

A.M. Mammary Memories (More of Zain)

October 27, 2009

American Morning co-host John Roberts ribaldly recalls yet again Zain Verjee’s ample melons. After a Jeanne Moos segment featuring Improv Everywhere singing in a store’s produce section, co-anchor Kiran Chetry commented, “That never happens at my grocery store. How about you?” Randily John replied, “Well, there was that time Zain Verjee appeared in the produce department of a store.”

[For the reader who may not recollect, Zain Verjee appeared on an American Morning “Great Grocery Challenge” segment memorialized by Jon Stewart on his Comedy Central Daily Show. As she was interviewed by guest co-host Kyra Phillips in the produce aisle, Kyra racily remarked, “Nice melon [pause] behind you there!” Also present, a suddenly reddened John whirled around in disbelief and declared, “Whoa!”]

Looking lustily up with almost a leer, John chortled, “I remember fondly back on that.” Grinning, Kiran risquely added, “That’s right. It made everybody very hungry for watermelon, right?” John smiled broadly, chuckled, and remained wisely silent.*

Well, it is that frisky early A.M.!

Zain’s “Nice Melons” Remembered

July 30, 2009

Yesterday American Morning co-anchor John Roberts had fond memories of CNN reporter Zain Verjee’s ample melons in the fresh produce department over a year ago (as memorialized by Jon Stewart’s Daily Show)*. As John introduced a segment with CNN correspondent Ed Henry who was similarly situated in a Bristol, VA, Krogers before Obama’s healthcare meeting, John and guest host Carol Costello could not repress a knowing hearty chuckle about Kyra Phillips’ naughty aside to Zain.

As Ed’s report ended, John was a bit more forthcoming. Trying to keep a straight face, John asked, “What about melons, Ed? Do they have any melons there?” Then he laughed lustily. Ed replied, “You know, John, I just don’t want to go there. Just can’t go there.” John responded, “We need Zain Verjee to do that part of the story.”

To the audience, Carol commented, “Inside American Morning joke but, boy, was it funny!” John added, “It hearkens back to a year ago actually.” For the rest of the story, see Carpe Diem’s “Kyra: ‘Nice Melons.'”**

“Lovely Gourd, Jeanne”

January 30, 2009

American Morning co-anchor John Roberts was channeling a naughty Kyra Phillips this morning. When Jeanne Moos ended her segment on a rejected PETA Super Bowl veggie sex ad, she suggestively blew on a phallic-shaped gourd: Laughing, Roberts ribaldly riposted, “Nice gourd, Jeanne. (Roberts seemed to be not so subtly paraphrasing Kyra Phillips “nice melons” comment to Zain Verjee in a grocery segment which was highlighted by Comedy Central comic Jon Stewart.) A smiling Kiran Chetry merely stated, “Butternut squash!”

No double entendres.

Peacock Struts: PeaKiran Demures

November 20, 2008

American Morning co-host John Roberts strutted his stuff today as he disdained his quotidian sartorial attire with his casual abandonment of the fashion noose, i.e., his tie. It was a good caz look that would seem to presage a like liberty for his co-anchor Kiran Chetry. Regrettably, it was not so: the nymph nonpareil was relegated to the rags of a long khaki skirt and long-sleeved, high-collared red top.

Janelle, Janelle. If you are going to jump start AM, you need testosterone as well as estrogen. John may get the girls going but Kiran needs to be set free to fire up the fellows. However, your theft of FNC’s “red memo” was a great idea:* of course, your lovelies (e.g., Kiran, Zain Verjee, Christine Romans, and Carol Costello) need not be adorned in the color of love to be desirable.

By the way, Kiran, don’t necessarily listen to your television spouse. Did he suggest cutting your long tresses? He may have been a mite jealous of your appreciative audience. Of course, you still look gorgeous but your magnificent mane should not have been tampered with.

Shaky AM

September 11, 2008

About 9:21 ET American Morning’s lost its video and then its audio as Zain Verjee interviewed Seif Gadhafi, son of Moammar Gadhafi, leader of Libya. AM cut to commercials and John Roberts apologized for the glitch when the program resumed. However, he failed to announce that AM’s HD was on the blink, too: in fact, the screen appeared worse than normal television at times. Losing HD is not so bad when John or Ali Velshi is on air but it is unacceptable when the comely Kiran Chetry is on (especially, when she looks as lovely as she did today in her beautiful brown mini with matching v-neck top and high heels).

Kyra, Nice Melons?

June 20, 2008

Maternity has been good to American Morning’s co-host Kiran Chetry. Today its positive effects proudly peeked over her plum-colored top. Kiran, you had better stay out of the produce department: just ask your CNN colleague Zain Verjee. Kyra Phillips, do you agree?

Kyra: “Nice Melons”

June 14, 2008

American Morning’s guest co-host Kyra Phillips spiced up the “Great Grocery Challenge” segment yesterday. As she opened the interview with Zain Verjee, positioned in the produce department, Kyra cooed, “Nice melons [pause] behind you there. Embarrassed and disbelieving John Roberts exclaimed, “Whoa!” and spun around.

The well-endowed, dazzling Zain blushed, smiled, lowered her head, and rolled her eyes. Kyra said, “Whoops! Whoops! I’m sorry: was that a personal [unintelligible]? Was that an H.R.?” Zain responded, “Kyra! No, darling! Everyone loves you when you say that–something like that.” Kyra giggled, “Fabulous!”

Watch out Fox & Friends! The looser American Morning appears ready to challenge you. Just wait until Kiran Chetry joins the fight!
