Prime-Time Megyn: “Hannity & Kelly”?

August 12, 2013

Roger Ailes’ “Minor Change”? In an exclusive Thursday, the Drudge Report reported that Fox News was “set to make its first primetime schedule change in 10 years” and that “superstar newswoman Megyn Kelly [had] landed the 9 PM slot” according to its top sources. When asked about that “rumor” by Fox News’s Neil Cavuto, FNC chief Roger Ailes responded, “Well, generally, I don’t confirm or deny any rumors….However, Megyn has earned a better time period: She’ll be in our prime-time lineup. But, I must quickly say that all of our stars will be back: We have new deals with (Sean) Hannity and Greta (Van Susteren) and Shep(ard Smith).” Noticing Ailes’ obvious omission, Cavuto quizzically commented, “So, it sounds to me like (Bill) O’Reilly‘s gone: Mischievously, Ailes answered, “Yep, he’s finished, that’s it! No, I’m just kidding.”*

According to New York Times columnist Bill Carter, the prevailing speculation is that Megyn will get her own hour and Sean Hannity will move to the 7:00 p.m. slot (replacing Fox Report with Shepard Smith) and Shep will move to an afternoon hour. However, in his Cavuto interview, Ailes himself cryptically remarked, “We have a great roster of talent: I am making a few minor changes….You have to choose well in the first place and have the guts to stay with people who can do the job. And, that’s what I try to do.”** Furthermore, he reportedly explained, “One of my jobs is to get the best audience flow between shows and that’s one of the reason[s] I’m making a few changes right now.”***

And, that very audience of Ailes in both prime-time and full-day ratings “has had a median age of 65-plus (according to the aforementioned NYT author). If the anecdotal observation that older people tend to be resistant to change is true, Ailes would do well to only “[make] a few minor changes” as he seeks to facilitate the “best audience flow” of his hyper-loyal older viewers (and tries  to attract a younger demographic at the same time). Creating three new shows for Megyn, Hannity, and Shep, as the NYT suggested, seems more than a few major changes–especially, when Gretchen Carlson’s new fall show and, an imminent iteration of Fox & Friends (with new co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck) are added into the mix.

“Hannity and Kelly”? Don’t count it out.

“You Sexy Thing”: Camerota CENSORED

November 6, 2011

Aly’s “sextacy“: Too hot for today’s F&FW? Yesterday, Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Alisyn Camerota reminded her long-time fans why they first fell in love with her. Probably, not unlike the very reason that her hubby Tim Lewis did.

During an F&FW “Best Father-Daughter Wedding Dance Ever?” segment Saturday, producers showed Ashley Richmond and her father David Sparks perform their fabulously fun wedding dance (which has garnered over a million views). During the course of the interview with the Internet sensations, an obviously impressed Aly revealed, “Now, see, I must confess, my husband and I did the same thing ten years ago when we got married. We did a funny first dance and we surprised the whole crowd. And, it was great.”*

And, indeed it was–if the universal response of the readers of Aly’s “In the Green Room” blog wedding dance post (December 5, 2007) were to be believed. However, unfortunately, for the F&FW viewers who want to judge for themselves, Fox News has deleted the actual dance footage. Nevertheless, the rest of the post and the comments remain.

Happily, Aly has provided some clues to her wanton wedding dance in an earlier post that day. She wrote, “‘You Sexy Thing’ by Hot Chocolate…was the song we first dance[d] to at our wedding.” She quipped, “As I write, my wedding video is in the edit room and we’re trying to find some creative way to protect Tim’s reputation (clearly we gave up on mine long ago).”

Unfortunately, apparently, Fox News has now retrogressively redacted the “offensive” clip. In doing so, it seems to have transgressed from editing to bowdlerizing the content of Fox & Friends Weekends. For viewers of the show since its inception, this self-censorship is especially abhorrent.

A disgraceful surrender to Orwellian political correctness? Or, merely an unfortunate anomaly? For some perspective, F&FW fans may well want to remember Jenny McCarthy’s classic opening that regularly made even Juliet Huddy blush.

F&FW fans who want to see Aly and Tim’s “You Sexy Thing” wedding video available, as Neil Cavuto might say, “DEMAND IT!”

Dad: Anoka’s Gretch Carlson “Excellent at Boys”

September 25, 2011

Missing Hall of Famers? Garrison Keillor declined & Michele Bachmann snubbed. Fox & Friends co-anchor Gretchen Carlson may have been a bit abashed as she was was inducted into the Hall of Fame at her high school alma mater on September 8. Not only did the renowned raconteur Garrison Keillor decline the very same honor but her “favorite babysitter,” GOP Prez candidate and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, was not even nominated for it. To boot, her dear dad zinged her with zest about being “excellent at boys” during her time at Anoka High School.

When Gretchen returned to F&F four days later, she proudly previewed a snippet of her parents introducing her at her high school’s “first ever Hall of Fame induction ceremony.”* As the footage began, her dad proudly proclaimed, “While at Anoka High, she was valedictorian, homecoming attending: then, looking up over his reading glasses with an arched eyebrow, he jauntily jibed, “and excellent at boys and socializing.”  (Of course, her doting dad also included her being Miss T.E.E.N. Minnesota and Miss Teen Nationals runner-up and alluded to her being 1989 Miss America.)

After that vid clip ran (and a subsequent one of her hugging her parents), a tearful Gretchen profusely praised both her mom and dad and thanked her community and family. However, she failed to mention the declination of the award by Keillor (who self-deprecatingly said that he “wasn’t anything in high school” but was rather “a quiet, mediocre student with no plans”) nor the obvious omission of Bachmann to be named for the honor itself or in the preliminary nominations. As to her father’s ribbing about being “excellent at boys,” Gretchen said nary a word.

In Gretchen’s defense, she did address, at least, Bachman’s exclusion from Anoka High’s Hall of Fame with her home state’s largest newspaper. According to the Star Tribune, Gretchen said, “My favorite baby sitter….I feel completely disheartened that she’s not part of this”: she added, “In the committee’s defense, in growing up in a small town, I know this happens. It was a grass-roots effort, from the heart. This is just so unfortunate.”

Even though Gretchen’s viewers may not solicit an explanation for Keillor’s skipping out on the Hall of Fame. With little doubt, they may want to know more about her your dad’s “excellent at boys” barb. If they do, they may want to heed the advice of the eponymous host of “Your World with Neil Cavuto” as to cable news customers who do not get FBN: I.e., “Demand it!”

A belated congratulations, Gretchen!

The Donald Jabs Obama: Hu, Too?

January 18, 2011

“You’ll let me know whether our President drops to his knees, right?” As Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived into the United States today, New York real estate mogul Donald Trump got in a sharp jab at President Barack Obama. During a phone interview with Your World host Neil Cavuto, the potential 2012 U.S. Presidential candidate opined about American-Chinese relations as Cavuto simultaneously covered live President Hu’s arrival at St. Andrew’s Air Force Base. When Cavuto noted, “Alright, they’re rolling out the red carpet [for President Hu],” Trump laughed, “”So, I don’t have a television in front of me: You’ll let me know whether our President drops to his knees, right?”*

In response, Cavuto smiled at Trump’s apparent acerbic reference to President Obama’s past “bowing” controversies, cautioning, “Now, Donald, careful, the President, the Vice President is there.” “Chastening” Trump further, “Cavuto continued, “You could do this when you’re President but right now we have an etiquette here.” In turn, Trump simply awaited Cavuto’s next query without comment.

[Author’s aside: In response to Trump’s jest, supra, off-camera Your World guest and FBN anchor Judge Andrew Napolitano could be heard laughing heartily.]

FNC’s Preview “View”?

July 24, 2010

“Power Panel”: Foxes’ View! On America Live yesterday, anchor Megyn Kelly introduced the new all-woman “Power Panel” to discuss View-like issues (rape by lying, advertising to teen mothers, and being nice in embarrassing situations). On Megyn’s panel were Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Alisyn Camerota, Fox News contributor and conservative columnist Andrea Tantaros, and frequent FNC guest and senior writer of the Daily Caller S.E. Cupp. Not only did these smart, sassy, and sexy ladies address issues oriented toward the gals, but also they exuded an irresistibly alluring pheromone for the guys, too.

Does Fox News have plans for this particular bevy of beauties? With five solo male anchors (Shepard Smith, Neil Cavuto, Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity) and only two solo female hosts (Megyn Kelly and Greta van Susteren), it may well intend to transform this potent Power Panel “pilot” into an hour-long program that would foster more gender equality in FNC’s line-up. To make room for it, FNC could replace Studio B with Shepard Smith in the afternoon with the Power Panel and elevate Shepard’s standing to the other male solo anchors by transforming the Fox Report with Shepard Smith into his eponymous Shep Report.

If so, perhaps, the Power Panel might be more aptly named the Foxes’ View.

Courtney on Cavuto!

January 6, 2009

Courney Friel on Your World with Neil Cavuto today: Crazy! Of course, Cavuto fans know that he likes the lissome lovelies: notice the frequent exposure that he lavishes on the voluptuous Victoria’s Secret models? Few red-blooded males blame him.

However, when FNC’s entertainment correspondent and former Maxim model suddenly appeared today as a Your World business reporter explaining Hyundai’s special return program for car buyers who lose their jobs, the author was taken aback. Even if Courtney has handled her entertainment correspondent responsibilities well, she has had some difficulties when she tried to take on more serious news as a Fox & Friends co-host. Nevertheless, she did well in her latest round robin role.

After the car segment, maybe a casino or lingerie segment is in the offing for Your World with Courtney.
