FNC’s “Mean Girl”: Kirsten Goes Loco on Lolo

August 10, 2012

Today’s “Beast”? Anthony Weiner’s former girlfriend and erstwhile defender Kirsten PowersFox News’ self-professed Christian progressive must have forgotten all about I Corinthians 13 (“The Love Chapter”) today. In her Happening Now appearance this afternoon, the usually compassionate Daily Beast columnist defended New York Times sports columnist Jere Longman’s misogynistic attack against Olympian Lolo Jones, a born-again Christian who posed a la a shy pre-Fall Eve in ESPN Body Issue 2009, for her sensual allure to an appreciative media at the perceived slight to her competitors. [N.B. No mention from Longman that Lolo is the first woman who has won back-to-back World Indoor titles in the 60-meter hurdles and that she was a three-time national champion hurdler and an eleven-time All-American at LSU.]

In Kirsten’s HN segment, her fellow Fox News colleague, former NYT investigative reporter Judith Miller opined, “I think it was very unfair….It was so harsh on her. It was so unforgiving.”* Substantiating her point, Miller cited the criticism of the NYT‘s very own ombudsman Arthur S. Brisbane, who said, “I think the writer [Jere Longman] was particularly harsh, even unnecessarily so….[T]his piece struck me as quite harsh and left me, along with others, wondering why the tone was so strong.”

Shaking her head, Kirsten emphatically countered, “I don’t agree! I do not agree.” Clad in her low-cut, sleeveless, short black dress, FNC’s blond beauty, perhaps, ironically groused, “He [Longman] never called her the Anna Kornikova: he interviewed somebody who said that….The point that he was actually trying to make is that here are actually two other American athletes whose names we don’t even know really…[who] have gotten no endorsement deals, have gotten no media coverage even though they have medals when this person who didn’t even get a medal is getting all of this media attention….How did she become the victim?”

Then, Kirsten added, “In terms of him talking the stuff about her, she’s the one who put it out there….She’s a woman. She’s, at least thirty….She cannot complain about media coverage that’s critical of her.” Coming to Lolo’s defense, Miller exclaimed, “Oh, yes, she can. Yes, she can when she’s really being attacked.” Shrugging her shoulders, Kirsten replied, “I don’t think it was an attack.”

Miller answered, “It was an attack! The only two people quoted in the entire piece are negative quotes.” Smirking, Kirsten caustically queried, “You’re not allowed to write a negative article about an athlete?” Miller riposted, “Wait a minute! He left out the fact that she had spinal surgery the year before. Her own extremely back story left out.” After clenching her teeth as Judith spoke, an irate Kirsten argued, “But, hasn’t that been covered extensively.”

Miller responded, “But, not in his column! If somebody’s reading that column, you have no idea where [she’s coming from]…Why beat up on this woman?” Unconvincingly, Kirsten replied, “He’s not beating up on her!” Immediately, Miler countered, “He was!” Appearing to contradict herself, Kirsten answered, “And, why he is not allowed to do that? I don’t understand.”

Interjecting, HN co-host Jon Scott remarked that while Lolo’s competitors may have won medals she was apparently the only woman to have won the national indoors hurdling championship twice. Cutting to the quick, he said, “Let’s show the photo that…aroused so much, I guess, ire, so much negative attention to her.” As the photo of a seated nude Lolo looked backed at the camera with all of her “lady bits” discreetly covered, Jon continued, “What doesn’t get noted is the small type there…a quote from her coach at LSU Dennis Shaver who writes, “She has the perfect core, which is where her horsepower comes from. Her abs are like a washboard, all muscle fiber and no fat. You don’t get like without proper diet and training: And, even then, you’d need Lolo’s determination.’ That gets lost in the coverage of that photo.”

“Exactly: it certainly did,” concurred Miller. As Kirsten laughed in derision, Miller chastened, “And, the back story gets lost. And, Kirsten, I’m really surprised.” Interposing, a bemused Kirsten queried, “What back story? I don’t even understand.”

Miller explained, “Wait a minute! You can make the point that the media likes some people and the companies choose to use some people without beating up on her, without demeaning her or her achievement. And, the fact that she’s a self-proclaimed Christian virgin and comes from this poor family. I think it’s an amazing story.”

Gesticulating animatedly, Kirsten interrupted, “As one of the other girls comes from a very poor story [sic]. And, it’s an amazing story that been covered ad nauseum.

As Kirsten ranted, a smiling Miller interposed, “She’s beautiful. Why should we hold that against her?”

In a seemingly disingenuous response, Kirsten said that “we shouldn’t” but then echoed Longman’s plaint that Lolo was getting a disproportionate amount of attention. Then, baring her claws, Kirsten caustically exclaimed, “And, I’m sorry, but, you know, the whole born-again Christian thing and posing naked, I don’t think they really go together. Call me crazy!…I talk about my faith all the time, and if I posed like that I would expect to hear about it!”

Conversely, if Kirsten posits like that, she should certainly expect to hear about it.

Coulter Scratches McCain

December 12, 2009

Rowrr! Yes, it finally happened: Ann Coulter belatedly clawed Meghan McCain back early this morning on Red Eye. It was a joke but it hit its mark with cat-like precision (based on the reaction of her fellow panelists).

Almost nine months ago to the day, Meghan McCain penned her Daily Beast column entitled “My Beef with Ann Coulter.” She wrote, “I find her [Coulter] offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time….I don’t like her demeanor. I have never been a person who was attracted to hate or negativity.” Not holding her fire, McCain added, “Everything about her is extreme: her voice, her interview tactics, and especially the public statements she makes about liberals.”

When Coulter did not immediately go after her, McCain appreciatively remarked, “At this point, I have more respect for Ann Coulter than I do for Laura Ingraham because at least Coulter didn’t come back at me with heartless, substance-less attacks about my weight.” (For a less-than-conservative characterization of Ingraham’s remarks, cf. this ThinkProgress.org link.)

On Red Eye today, Coulter returned as a guest commentator. During a segment on Tiger Wood’s continuing saga, host Greg Gutfeld played a Today clip of Jamie Jungers who claims to have had an eight-month relationship with the golfing great. After viewing footage of the cute chubby blond, Coulter jested, “Wait! Meghan McCain had an affair with Tiger Woods?”

Gutfeld and his sidekick Bill Shultz roared with laughter. Even liberal guest, professor Marc Lamont Hill of Columbia seemed to join in the merriment. Shultz laughed, “I hope I register my disgust in that two-shot, Greg. Ooh!” Gutfeld joked, “How did she have the time between Twittering?”

In the author’s view, Jungers does seem to bear a resemblance to McCain and Red Eye is a politically incorrect free-for-all. Ergo, Coulter may have waited for the perfect time to scratch back at her GOP antagonist without any blowback.

Carol Gets Playboy: John Doesn’t

June 19, 2009

Like a man who says that he “reads Playboy for the articles,” moderate Daily Beast columnist John Avlon turned somewhat mealy-mouthed during his weekly “‘Wingnut’ of the Week'” segment on CNN’s American Morning today. When he dubbed Playboy “‘Wingnut’ on the Left'” for Guy Cimbalo’s early June website column entitled, “So Right It’s Wrong: The Top 10 Conservative Women We Hate to Love, Avlon cited the Playboy columnist’s comparison of women, e.g., Peggy Noonan and Dana Perino, to Eva Braun and said that “it was way over the line so much so that Playboy took it off their website and issued an apology.” Happily, for the audience which had not previously heard of the controversy, guest host Carol Costello provided a more complete picture.

Carol commented, “It was incredibly sexist….A lot of conservative women and, actually, many liberal women, too, said Playboy crossed the line with that one because it also sort of said it was okay to, and they didn’t use the word “love” really…It was sort of like the “f word” and it wasn’t feminism either.” For the viewer with a DVR, AM provided a fleeting RedState.com screen capture of the article which included the text that actually earned the Avlon’s “‘Wingnut’ on the Left'”: It read, “[T]here is a way to reach across the line without letting principles fall by the wayside. We speak, naturally, of the hate f**k.”

As an aside, if the viewer wants the perspective of a woman who was listed, Megyn Kelly amply provided it on her show America’s Newsroom.* She heatedly declared that “Playboy Magazine’s online site unleashed a vile attack” against her in what “some [were] calling a rape list. She added, “In my view, this is not the act of a publication that respects women in any way whatever their politics happen to be.

Today the author of Independent Nation played the centrist “wingnut.”

Meghan McCain: Miss McBeef?

March 12, 2009

Is Meghan McCain confused? Did she think that Ann Coulter dissed her vis-a-vis Laura Ingraham? Just a mere six days after Ingraham unloaded on the Daily Beast blogger and her dad, Meghan wrote “My Beef with Ann Coulter.”*

The very day after Meghan complained that her Dad’s failed candidacy had ruined her social life,** Ingraham, in an interview with Fox & Friends, declared, “I think maybe she [Meghan] should just stop writing insipid blogs and just focus on something positive. These people who are constantly whining about things that don’t matter: Go out and volunteer. I’m sure that you’ll find some nice people to date.”*** Last night FNC’s king of cable Bill O’Reilly remarked that he did not know what had started the one-sided feud with Ann Coulter. Today Fox & Friends co-hosts, Alisyn Camerota, Steve Doocy, and Brian Kilmeade elicited no further elucidation in their interview with the flaxen-tressed daughter of John McCain.

Not only does the timing of Meghan’s attacks on Coulter seems to indicate that she has the wrong woman in her sights but also the personal nature appears to reflect that to boot. Meghan decried Coulter as “offensive, radical, insulting” and one who “could be the poster woman for the most extreme side of the Republican Party.”* Not to mention, on F&F today she carped that Coulter had not answered her twenty-question quiz.

Meghan, did you mistake Coulter for Ingraham? Or are you aping Ron Reagan?

Meghan McCain Mocked

March 3, 2009

On Fox & Friends today, conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham unloaded on Daily Beast bloggette Meghan McCain and her dad John McCain. When co-host Brian Kilmeade asked about Meghan’s post on how her dad’s campaign had ruined her dating life, Laura sarcastically said, “I woke up sweating [because] I was so upset by Meghan: I wouldn’t know who she was if she bumped into me in the street.”

Turning serious, Laura continued, “I do know this: John McCain’s anemic campaign has done more than ruin a lot of people’s personal lives: It’s done a lot to help wreck the economy by paving the way for Barack Obama. She should criticize her father for suspending his campaign and signing on for that absurd TARP….That was a disaster.” Addressing Megan directly, she added, “Our economic lives are in a shamble, Megan: We don’t really care about your dating life.”

With big smiles and loud laughter, co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade visibly enjoyed Laura’s vitriolic response while a less appreciative Gretchen, crossing her arms, clearly did not. In defense of Megan, Gretchen replied, “Whoo-hoo! No, no, no. But Laura, I know that you are upset about his campaign but actually she’s fair and balanced in her blog.”

Giving Gretchen no quarter, Laura deadpanned, “Oh, okay. I think maybe she should just stop writing insipid blogs and just focus on something positive. These people who are constantly whining about things that don’t matter: Go out and volunteer. I’m sure that you’ll find some nice people to date. We don’t really care about this.”

A silent Gretchen turned to Steve who segued to a new topic. Then she smiling turned to Brian for his thoughts: he merely grinned. Bemused, Gretch simply guffawed.

Gretch: Gimme Some Skin!

December 8, 2008

Emotively exuberant, Fox & Friends co-host, Gretchen Carlson, this morning exhorted Pundit Pit participant, the Daily Beast’s John Batchelor,  to give her a high five. After his postulation that New York Governor David Paterson would likely pick Caroline Kennedy as Hillary Clinton’s replacement as junior NY U.S. Senator because of political expediency, Gretchen raised her hand and raved, “Best point of the day, John! Give me some skin!” The gray-haired columnist hesitantly lifted his hand and did so.

Her exchange reminded the author of her asking Shepard Smith for the secret handshake to make up with him after he dissed F&F over its coverage of a bogus airport threat: He looked at her with seeming disdain and said, “I don’t know the handshake.” Perhaps, more a propos is her seeking similar “skin” approbation from co-anchors Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade on occasion: they both seem to respond reluctantly to her request with awkward attempts to acquiesce.

As a former Miss America who was inspired to enter the competition by the ebony beauty Vanessa Williams, the vanilla lovely need only to compete on her own terms. No need to chew the scenery for effect. Just be natural, Gretch!
