Kiran’s OK! Baby Pics OK?

OK! Why was the celebrity baby pics segment axed today on American Morning? The story was titled “Ethics for Sale” and later “Photo Bidding War” and was scheduled at 8:43 A ET. After Kiran Chetry teased it at 7:44 A ET, I e-mailed her at 7:52 A ET asking if she and her husband Chris Knowles had been paid by OK! Magazine for their baby’s pictures. AM did one more tease at 8:05 A ET and then no more. It never aired.

Strangely, a rerun of an earlier story on the banning of trans fat by California lawmakers was played instead at the appointed time of 8:43 A ET. Later (after another rerun concerning Miss USA falling on her derriere), Kiran explained, “Because of some breaking news on the economic front, we ran out of time and weren’t able to bring you the story about some celebrity baby photos going for as much as fifteen million, Angelina Jolie’s new twins one of them: so is that ethical and what are the implications of that?” She added, “Even if it’s going to charity, is it the right thing to do?” Then John assured the audience that the story would be aired the next hour on CNN Newsroom which was “coming up in a few minutes’ time”: it didn’t.

Did the producers kill the story because of a perceived conflict of interest? Ironically, from the author’s perspective, making money off baby pics, especially if given to charity, is not ethically adverse. However, the story’s evaporation seemed somewhat suspect. AM, trust your audience: we’re fair.

I saw this tease and was curious as to how Kiran would handle this. Does anyone know if the piece was aired at all?

I thought it was tasteless for Kiran and her husband to have the baby pictures in a magazine that is known for nothing more than tabloid trash. Money talks. Fame talks. Notoriety talks. I think Kiran used to be rather modest, or at least she acted like she was, but over the past few years, she has developed one of the biggest heads in tv news. Too bad, cause she was likeable in the beginning. I read that she and Chris moved into a 5 bedroom house in the suburbs, so maybe the Ok! money helped them buy their fancy digs.

My only comment would be: Are there actual people out there who give a rat’s butt about Kiran and Chris Knowles’ s baby pictures? I mean, really? Do you care, other than, I’m glad the pregnancy/birth went well, hope all continues to be well, in a sort of “we’re all human, babies are blessings” kind of way? Who gives a toss about this? Were you sitting up at night, sweating over the birth? LOL, who are these people to assume that ANYONE other than immediate family cares about them having another baby, to the point of, “Let’s publish the pics in a magazine and make a boatload of money”? Was America waiting with eager anticipation over THIS? I think not.

Don’t get me wrong. I thank you for caring, Jake, and thank you for this blog, and posting that piece of info. Yay for them. I just think this is the ultimate of WEIRD that these people would get that amount of cash to put pics of their baby in a gossip magazine- and then have people (who do not know them) gush over it, like they were invited to the birth. Does anyone CARE about Kiran’s baby? I am happy, as a person, that they have added to their family- but in the grand scheme of things, my interest in this ranks up there with my interest in the GNP of Denmark. Yes, I wish them well, have no ill will toward the Knowles family. But, really? Are you all rushing out to buy a copy of this?

I know, I know, it’s a celeb culture, and we are to worship those perfect beings on TV. Just seemed odd to me, that’s all.

Jake may have posted this on his board, but don’t fault him. He’s not the one with the super ego here, but instead that honor belongs to Kiran Chetry and Chris Knowles. They are the ones who signed some exclusive contract with OK magazine, thinking that the world would be all a twitter over their baby pictures. I think it’s disgusting when celebs use the birth of a child as a publicity piece and money making tool. But for the life of me, I can’t figure out why Kiran thought herself so hot that she could command a decent dollar amount for her newborn’s pictures. A lot of people don’t even know who she is. She’s a small fish over at CNN. Look at the big names at CNN who have been there for years. They have sources, years and years of field reporting under their belts and credentials that would make her’s pale in comparison. As far as experience is concerned, she fit much better at Fox.

Oh, no, I am not faulting Jake. My sincerest apologies if I can across as being cranky at him. I love this blog!

I agree- Chris and Kiran, love that you have a beautiful new baby, but my interest does not include shelling out future gas $$$ to pay for that tabloid magazine to see him. Her. Whatever she had, boy, girl, I don’t know, didn’t read OK! yet. Maybe at the checkout counter…..

No hosility toward Jake, unless he’s getting a cut of the $$$$ (wink).

Jake, you’ve stirred up a regular Nepalese beauty of a hornet’s nest on this one. As for ‘fresh faces’ at Fox News, I’d vote for Savannah Guthrie and Emily Heil.

  7. jakeho Says:

Chris G., no offense taken. I’m glad that you’re a reader & enjoy the blog.

Hgb3, you may be right. As to Savannah & Emily, attractive possibilities. Hope the vacation is going well.
